NGHS Accolades

In the last three years, NGHS has received a number of prestigious awards, which are summarised below.

We are also very proud of our students and staff, whose individual successes are celebrated in our weekly newsletter, Newport News. You can find previous editions here to find out yet more about the success of our NGHS family.

NGHS was inspected by Ofsted in 2019. We were one of the first schools in the country to have an inspection under the new revised, tougher framework. We are delighted that NGHS remains an outstanding school, as it has been since 2007. You can read more about our report here.

Following an ever-increasing trend of results improvements, coupled with our work in supporting other schools in the community, and our Ofsted outstanding judgement in 2019, it was a delight to learn that NGHS was crowned the West Midlands State Secondary School of the Year 2020.
NGHS was honoured to receive a Platinum Safeguarding Award in March 2023 to recognise the highest level of support and care taken by staff and students at NGHS.
Health and Wellbeing are the most important aspects of our overall provision at NGHS. Our recent national award at silver level for mental health provision was a very welcome endorsement of our efforts to support pupil and staff mental health. Most schools begin at bronze level and it was lovely to receive an immediate silver award.
NGHS has an active and influential eco-committee, which we call SustaiNGHS. Together, they have secured our green eco-flag status and they lead our recycling scheme in school as well as positively influencing our approach to all things 'green' at NGHS.
The Holocaust is taught sensitively at NGHS, but not just in History. Other subjects contribute to the teaching of this important part of History. University College London (UCL) became interested in our curriculum and we are delighted to have the opportunity to work with them as a Beacon School.
Every student in Year 7-11 has two hours of PE and Games at NGHS and students in the sixth form have an hour of PE enrichment. This is now the third year we have attained the Gold Mark award for School Games. There are so many sporting opportunities at NGHS. Why not find out more about school sport?
The AcSEED Award was gained in 2020 and was given to the school as a result of an external review of our pastoral and safeguarding systems. More information can be found here.

Since 2018, NGHS has been consistently ranked as one of the country's top performing schools for both attainment and progress. The School has received certificates and enjoys membership of the Schools, Students and Teachers Network. Our Headteacher has also written papers for the SSAT and staff attend training and annual conferences.
SMID is a data package to help schools monitor pupil progress simply and efficiently. NGHS is one of the first schools in the country to use SMID and its use ensures every pupil's progress is tracked individually and no stone is left unturned to help students maximise their grades in the sixth form.
In 2019, NGHS began to form a School Eco-group called SustaiNGHS which has a membership of circa 40 students who have revolutionised our recycling practices and are now working on a number of other projects to ensure the school takes its responsibilities to reduce waste and support the future of our planet. Our Bronze award is the first step in celebrating our achievements in this important field. Silver next!
