The PE department aims to deliver a high-quality PE curriculum which students enjoy and are able to achieve success in, so that they are able to continue with a lifelong habit of participation.
In PE for our vision to be successful we ensure students experience a wide variety of sports allowing them to initially develop the core skills needed to progress in all sports covered. The core skills will be developed and advanced skills along with tactics and strategies will be introduced allowing students to have the confidence and ability to play a variety of sports. Therefore, giving them the best opportunity to continue playing sport in later life.
Students will become familiar with a range of sport specific terminology. As students progress through each sport and develop on their skill set, knowledge of tactics and strategies, and their understanding of rules and regulations they will be expected to use specific terminology. Students will also have opportunities to take on coaching and umpiring roles developing their knowledge of the sport further. We want our lessons to be engaging and enjoyable and allow the students to progress and improve their performance level further. Students have two lessons a week in Year 7 and 8. In KS4, students continue with this subject over two lessons per week , with the sports offered to students changing in KS4 to a more alternative rather than traditional curriculum. We also offer 1 hour of core PE for year 12 and 13 where students have found this very beneficial. In the sixth form, the department also delivers the AS PE course with the OCR examination board, this is split into three sections: Physiological factors affecting performance, Psychological and socio-cultural themes in education and their performance in physical education.
British values will be at the core of the curriculum and upheld through the delivery of sport and the ethos of sportsmanship, ensuring students leave school not only with the characteristics of a good sportsperson but also as a well-rounded citizen who can make a positive contribution to society.
Outside of lessons, students have the opportunity to attend many extra-curricular clubs that happen during lunchtime and after school. For certain sports there will be local league, cup and tournament competitions for which students can represent the school. The school also has external coaches for some sports, such as netball, fencing and karate, so that students benefit from the expertise of these coaches. Further information about these opportunities can be found here.
