Newport Girls' High is celebrating another successful set of GCSEs, with 82 per cent of results graded 7-9 (A-A*). Whilst all subjects enjoyed considerable success, a special mention is made to Mathematics and Further Maths where the average grade was an 8 (A*).
Students who sat EBACC subjects did particularly well with an average grade of 7.63 across these demanding qualifications.
Following last week's success at A-level, the school continues to hold its position as the top-performing school in the town and region.
Particular subject successes include:
- The average Maths grade was an 8 and 97% of students achieved grades 7-9 (A*-A) in Maths!
- Every student achieved a pass in English with 86 per cent getting an A* or A equivalent
- In Music, twice as many students achieved a Grade 9 than in 2019
- In German, Grade 8 was the most popular with over half getting 9 or 8
- In Biology, 73/85 students achieved Grades 9-7 (A*-A)

Four students achieved a very rare accolade of straight grade 9s and the school congratulates: Lauren M, Shruti M, Hareem M and Charlotte T. On average, NGHS students added around three quarters of a grade to their government predictions.
Headteacher, Michael Scott, was quick to praise this year group’s resilience and desire to get the basics right before building on their skills and knowledge to reach such a high level.
He said: “Our Year 11 class of 2023 did not let anything stand in their way of success. We are thrilled with their hard work and the support of their teachers and families. We look forward to welcoming a large number of them along with a bumper group of new entrants to Year 12 in September.”
NGHS's popularity as the leading school for GCSE and A-level continues with a number of external students joining us in Year 12 in September. If you are still looking for a sixth form place, please contact urgent@nghs.org.uk before 28 August 2023.
